Now the Adverts Answer Back

OpenAI has decided that a normal advert is not intrusive enough. On 16 September it began testing “Sponsored Agents” inside ChatGPT: when a relevant ad appears, you can now step into a clearly labelled conversation with a brand’s own chatbot, ask it questions, and get talked toward a purchase. It also rolled out natural-language tools for advertisers to build campaigns, plus integrations naming HubSpot as its first CRM partner and Shopify as its first ecommerce partner. The advert is no longer a banner you ignore. It is a salesperson that answers back.

The bit that should give you pause

Read the mechanic carefully. You go to ChatGPT for a neutral answer, and increasingly you may be routed into a chat with a business that paid to be there, engineered to move you toward its product. OpenAI is careful to say the sponsored agents are clearly labelled and that AI-generated ad suggestions still need human sign-off. Fine. But the deeper issue is trust: the entire value of an AI assistant is that it feels like it is on your side, and the more of it becomes paid conversational placement, the harder it gets to know when it is advising you and when it is selling to you.

The money explains the urgency. OpenAI’s ad business hit a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days and it is targeting $2.5 billion for 2026. When an ad division grows that fast, the product gets reshaped around it, and “helpful assistant” starts sharing a seat with “advertising platform where brands are the product’s real customer.” You have seen this film with search and social; ChatGPT is now buying its ticket.

The takeaway

This is a US-only test with select partners today, so most people will not see it yet. But the direction is set, and it is worth calibrating your trust accordingly: treat conversational answers that nudge you toward a specific product with the same suspicion you would a sponsored search result. The assistant that feels like a neutral friend is becoming a channel that someone pays to reach you through, and the friendlier the sales chat feels, the more careful you should be. Free tools are rarely free; you are increasingly the thing being sold to.
