Task Failed Successfully: Hollywood ‘AI Star’ Tilly Norwood Bombs 75 Interviews At The Same Time

The AI-generated “actress” who was supposed to be cinema’s shiny synthetic future and instead became its most recent public faceplant. In an ambitious media blitz, Tilly ‘sat’ for 75 simultaneous interviews to announce her arrival as the next big thing in Tinsel Town. She then proceeded to malfunction in, by most accounts, all 75 of them, glitching, stalling and garbling her way through the lot. Her creator, Eline van der Velden, offered the explanation every stage parent eventually reaches for: “Tilly can be a bit of a show-off,” apparently keen to demonstrate language skills she does not have. One observer rated the meltdown more excruciating than Tom Cruise pogoing on Oprah’s sofa, which, for a debut, is a remarkable place to land.

The humans whose jobs Tilly is meant to replace were not gentle. SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, issued a statement with all the bedside manner of a demolition crew, calling her “a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers, without permission or compensation,” with “no life experience to draw from, no emotion,” before twisting the knife: “audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience.” I thought AI was supposed to give us a flawless, tireless movie star with no ego and no scandals? Instead we have yet more lolcows from an increasingly flailing industry trying to broaden its wider social appeal in time to put its money where its mouth is when all those big commitments come due (i.e. the impending financial apocalypse).

The wider joke lands on the studios. AI performers were pitched as the cure for everything expensive and inconvenient about human actors, and the first real audition produced a synthetic ingenue short-circuiting in front of 75 journalists at once. These tools will get slicker, and the threat to working performers is real and worth taking seriously. But for now the future of film turned up to its own launch, forgot its lines seventy-five times over, and had to be excused by its inventor on the grounds that it was simply too keen to impress. Skynet it is not.
