For half a century, people all over the world have been driven to distraction by a low, droning hum that nobody around them can hear and no instrument can find. It has been blamed on secret military experiments, industrial machinery, underground tunnels and, inevitably, aliens. A new study offers a more unsettling and more intimate answer: for many of the people who hear it, the Hum may be coming from inside their own ears.
What the Hum is
“The Hum” is the name given to a persistent low-frequency droning reported by an estimated 2 to 4 percent of people worldwide, often at night, often maddeningly. The defining feature is that it seems completely external, as though a distant diesel engine is idling somewhere just out of sight, and yet sufferers can rarely locate a source and microphones typically pick up nothing. Whole towns, from Bristol in England to Taos in New Mexico, have become famous for their local Hums. For the people who live with it, this is no curiosity. It is genuinely tormenting, wrecking sleep and concentration for years on end.
What the new study found
Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, led by Professor Markus Drexl, worked with 28 people who hear the Hum and tested two obvious explanations. First: do these people have unusually sharp low-frequency hearing, letting them detect real sounds the rest of us miss? Second: are their own ears generating faint but measurable noises? For most participants, neither held up. The conclusion, published in the journal PLOS ONE, is that the likeliest culprit is a form of low-frequency tinnitus. The sound is generated somewhere in the auditory system itself, even though it feels for all the world like it is pouring in from outside.
Why “it’s in your head” is not an insult here
This is the important bit, because “it is all in your head” sounds dismissive and is not meant to be. Tinnitus is a real, physical, well-documented condition, and telling someone their Hum is internal is not calling them fanciful or unstable. If anything it is validating: it means the sound is real, produced by real biology, and potentially treatable through the growing toolkit of tinnitus therapies, rather than something they must chase fruitlessly around the house with a sound meter forever. It also, gently, shuts the door on the more colourful theories. It is not 5G, it is not sonar, and it is regrettably not aliens.
None of this makes the Hum any less real for those who endure it. It simply relocates the mystery from the world outside to the extraordinary, and still only half-understood, machinery of human hearing. Sometimes the strangest signal is the one your own body is quietly sending you.
