Nvidia Might Guarantee $250bn So OpenAI Can Keep Buying Nvidia Chips

Nvidia reportedly wants to guarantee a quarter of a trillion dollars so that OpenAI can afford to keep buying Nvidia chips. Read that back slowly, because it is the whole AI economy in one sentence.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Nvidia is in talks to backstop roughly $250 billion of financing so OpenAI can lease a 10-gigawatt data centre in southern Ohio. The site sits on a decommissioned uranium-enrichment plant near Piketon, about 50 miles south of Columbus. SoftBank’s energy arm is building it. The full campus, chips included, could run north of $500 billion.

What a backstop guarantee actually means

Here is the plain-English version. A backstop guarantee means Nvidia promises the lenders that if OpenAI cannot make its lease payments or service the construction debt, Nvidia steps in and pays. OpenAI keeps the building. Nvidia eats the loss. This is called vendor financing, and it is exactly what it sounds like: the supplier lends you the money to buy the supplier’s product.

Nvidia is separately reported to be discussing financing OpenAI’s actual chip purchases too, a figure floated as high as $350 billion. So Nvidia could end up guaranteeing the building that houses the chips, bankrolling the chips that fill the building, and booking the revenue when OpenAI pays for those chips. Circular does not begin to cover it.

Why the little guy should care

The uncomfortable read is that the debt markets appear to have looked at a $500bn data centre and flinched. If a lease this size needed a chipmaker to co-sign it, ordinary lenders were not comfortable pricing the risk on their own. When the two richest players in a boom have to guarantee each other’s homework, that should read as nerves, not strength. It is a company propping up its own biggest customer to keep the demand curve pointing up.

And the risk does not stay in the boardroom. Builds like this are one reason memory prices are climbing and power grids in data-centre states are straining. You do not have to own a single Nvidia share to pay for this boom through your electricity bill and the price of your next laptop.

None of it is signed. The talks are ongoing, the terms are not final, and the whole thing could shrink or collapse. But the fact that a deal this circular is even on the table tells you how much money now depends on OpenAI never missing a payment. This is general information and reporting, not investment advice.

Keep an eye on who is really carrying the risk. It is rarely the people making the announcements.

Did you know: the Piketon site in the frame here spent decades as a Cold War uranium-enrichment plant before it was decommissioned, so the next compute arms race would literally run on the bones of the last one.
