Half a Trillion Into AI in Six Months but Goldman Swears It’s Definitely Not a Bubble

The numbers coming out of AI fundraising have stopped meaning anything, which is usually the moment a sensible person starts working out where the exits are. In the first half of 2026 alone, AI startups hoovered up $510 billion of investment. Not revenue. Investment. And 43% of that, nearly half the entire sector’s haul, went to just two companies, OpenAI and Anthropic. Anthropic now carries a $965 billion valuation, the richest of any AI startup on Earth, for a company most people could not describe the business model of if you spotted them the first three words.

Pile on the individual rounds and it gets sillier: Cognition raised $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation, Mistral pulled in €3 billion, Nvidia agreed to pay $12.9 billion for Hugging Face. This is money moving like the last helicopter out of the city. And yet the reassurance from on high is almost comically hedged. Goldman Sachs strategist Peter Oppenheimer’s read is that “there does not appear to be a valuation bubble, but there may be an earnings bubble,” which is a sentence that insists everything is fine except the bit where these companies actually turn a profit. Translated: the prices might be justified, so long as you never look too hard at whether the earnings will ever show up. Sleep tight.

None of this guarantees a crash is booked for Tuesday. The AI leaders are real businesses with real revenue, and a mania can run for years before the reckoning arrives. But when half a trillion dollars funnels into one sector in six months, two firms take nearly half of it, and the calming line from Goldman is “not a valuation bubble, just an earnings bubble,” the honest posture is to enjoy the party with one hand on the door handle.
