The US Department of Defence has opened GenAI.mil, a secure portal that drops OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil, xAI’s Grok for Government and Google’s Gemini onto the desks of three million defence personnel. Around 1.7 million have already signed in. It is one of the largest single AI rollouts anywhere, and the most interesting thing about it is who is missing.
Claude is not invited
Anthropic’s Claude, widely rated among the most capable and safety-focused models on the market, is absent, after the administration flagged it as a supply-chain risk. Read that plainly: the lab that has arguably leaned hardest into safety and government-friendly guardrails is the one shut out, while the model from a founder with a direct line to the White House walks straight in.
What GenAI.mil actually is
It is a walled, accredited environment where cleared staff can use commercial-grade models on government work without piping sensitive material through the public internet. That part is sensible. Every large organisation is building some version of this, and the military has more reason than most to want its own fenced garden.
The uncomfortable pattern
When the biggest customer on earth picks its AI vendors, the deciding factor is turning out to be proximity to power rather than the benchmark scores. That should worry you whichever lab you favour, because it means the models winning the most consequential contracts are being chosen on politics, and the incentive for every other lab is now to cosy up rather than to build the safest thing. Procurement shapes the whole industry, and this is procurement telling labs what actually gets rewarded.
The take
A giant, security-conscious AI deployment for the military is not sinister on its face; it was always coming. The tell is the guest list. When “supply-chain risk” is the reason given for excluding the safety-first lab, while the politically-connected one sails through, the reason on the label is not the reason in the room. Watch which labs start optimising for access over excellence. That is the cost.
