ChatGPT Ate the AI Writing Star: How Jasper Lost Half Its Revenue

A cautionary tale for the whole “AI wrapper” economy, told through one company. Jasper was the golden child of AI writing, a startup built on top of OpenAI’s models that hit a $1.5 billion valuation selling “an AI that writes your marketing copy.” Then the thing it was built on top of ate its lunch. Jasper’s revenue reportedly collapsed from around $120 million in 2023 to roughly $55 million in 2024, less than half, in a single year. The culprit is not mismanagement. It is ChatGPT.

What actually happened

Jasper’s core pitch, “I need an AI that writes for me,” was a brilliant business right up until ChatGPT and Claude offered the same thing directly, better, and at a third of the price. Why pay Jasper a premium to sit between you and GPT when you can just talk to GPT? The mass-market use case Jasper owned got absorbed by the very models it depended on. It is the defining risk of building your company on somebody else’s engine: the engine-maker can build your car and sell it cheaper whenever it likes.

The AI writing market split in two as a result. On one side, the general-purpose models (Claude for the most natural long-form prose, ChatGPT for versatile research-and-draft work) got good enough to replace most dedicated writing tools outright. On the other, the survivors are the specialists that do something a raw chatbot cannot: enforce one brand voice across a big team, plug into specific workflows, hit compliance rules. Jasper’s escape route has been to retreat into exactly that enterprise-brand-voice niche.

The lesson

If you are choosing an AI writing tool: for most individuals, Claude or ChatGPT at $20 a month is the honest answer, and a dedicated writing subscription only earns its keep if you genuinely need the team-and-brand features a chatbot lacks. If you are building an AI company, Jasper’s fall is the whole warning in one chart: own something the model-makers cannot trivially clone, or plan to be cloned. Being a thin layer over someone else’s model was never a business, it was a head start, and head starts run out.
