Odysseus is the newcomer everyone’s talking about, but it is not the only way to run a private AI, and for a lot of people it is not the best fit. Here is a straight comparison of the four tools worth your time, and a simple “pick this if” for each. One thing to hold in your head first: most of these are front-ends. They give you the interface and the features; the actual model is usually run by Ollama underneath. You mix and match.
Open WebUI — the safe default
The incumbent, and it earned the title. Open WebUI has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times and has a community in the hundreds of thousands. It is a polished, ChatGPT-style interface with document search, multiple users with role-based permissions, and a plugins system, and it connects to Ollama with essentially no effort. Reviewers describe it as “steady, covers everything, a little boring”, which is exactly what you want from infrastructure. Pick this if you want a reliable, battle-tested private chat interface for yourself or a small team and you value stability over novelty.
AnythingLLM — for your documents
AnythingLLM is built around the idea of talking to your own files. It is strong on retrieval (RAG), multi-step agents, tool-calling and organising work into separate “workspaces”, and like the others it delegates the actual model to Ollama, LM Studio or a cloud provider. Some find it feels a touch stripped-back for something calling itself a workspace. Pick this if your main goal is querying and reasoning over your own documents and knowledge base.
LM Studio — the friendliest start
The odd one out, in a good way. LM Studio is a single desktop app that bundles the model runner and the chat window together, so you never touch a terminal. It also quietly acts as a local server that other tools can plug into, and it ships developer SDKs. The catch is that it is not fully open-source. Pick this if you are nervous about command lines and just want to download an app, click a model and start chatting today.
Odysseus — the ambitious all-in-one
Everything from last week: not just chat but memory, self-evolving skills, agents, model comparison, a hardware-matching “Cookbook”, email, calendar and an image editor, wrapped in the best-looking interface of the lot. The trade-offs are its newness (less battle-tested than Open WebUI), a larger security surface, and a setup that assumes a little Docker comfort. Pick this if you are a tinkerer who wants the most complete, most polished, do-everything workspace and you do not mind being on a fast-moving project.
The honest recommendation
For most people just starting out, the boring answer is the right one: Ollama plus Open WebUI (or LM Studio if you want to avoid the terminal entirely) is the gentlest, most reliable on-ramp, and it is completely free. Reach for AnythingLLM if your life is really about your documents. Reach for Odysseus if you want the ambitious, all-in-one experience and you enjoy the tinkering as much as the result.
There is no single winner here, and anyone who declares one is not paying attention. These are free, open tools that mix and match; the correct move is to try two of them over a weekend and keep whichever one you actually open on a Tuesday morning.
