In the space of roughly 72 hours, three of the biggest names in AI coding put out new or upgraded agents: Cursor, Anthropic and Alibaba. No single launch reset the industry. Together, though, they did something more important than any one feature: they pushed the price of a capable coding agent down again, and the trend line for 2026 now points firmly at the floor.
The race to the bottom
The pattern has been building all year. Chinese open-weight models from the likes of Alibaba’s Qwen undercut Western prices by huge margins, the Western labs answered in September with flagship price cuts, and now the coding-agent tier is getting the same treatment. Every few weeks, roughly the same capability costs less. For a developer, the effective price of “an AI that reads your codebase and writes real changes” keeps dropping.
Why it is happening
Two forces. First, genuine efficiency gains: the models are getting cheaper to run. Second, and more important, land-grab economics. With IPOs on the horizon and enterprise standardisation up for grabs, market share is the metric that matters, and the fastest way to buy it is to undercut everyone else. Cheap now, in the hope of locked-in customers later.
What it means for developers
Short term, this is a gift. The tooling is getting better and cheaper at the same time, and you have more leverage than ever to switch providers or play them against each other. The smart move is to keep your workflow portable rather than welding yourself to one vendor’s agent, because today’s loss-leader pricing is a customer-acquisition tactic, and acquisition prices do not last.
What it means for the companies
Thin margins and a dependence on a story that ends with pricing power nobody has yet. Someone is burning money to win you, with a plan to raise prices once the market consolidates. We have watched this film in other industries. The developers who keep their options open will be glad they did when the bill arrives.
What this means
Enjoy the freefall, use the leverage, and design for portability. The cheapest, smartest coding agent of this month will not be the cheapest next month, and the vendor counting on your loyalty is counting on you not noticing.
