The most popular AI code editor now belongs to a rocket company. SpaceX has closed a $60bn all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the maker of Cursor, folding it into a freshly minted “SpaceXAI” division. It is, by a distance, the largest startup buyout ever recorded, and if your first reaction was to read that sentence twice, you are not alone.
What actually happened
The deal, signed in June and closed on 14 August, converted Cursor’s shares into roughly 389 million SpaceX Class A shares. Cursor now runs as a wholly owned subsidiary, its team plugged into SpaceX’s Colossus supercomputer, and the combined operation has already put out a beta of something called “Grok Bot”. Morgan Stanley reckons Cursor could add up to $13bn to SpaceX revenue by 2027.
Why a rocket firm wants your code editor
Because Cursor is not really a code editor to Musk, it is a distribution channel and a pile of compute-hungry demand pointed at his own AI stack. Owning the tool developers already live in means owning the front door to how a lot of software gets written. The Colossus tie-in is the tell: this is about feeding an AI empire, and Cursor is the funnel.
The bit developers should watch
When the tool you depend on becomes one arm of a much larger agenda, the roadmap stops being about you. Pricing, model choice and data handling now answer to a parent whose priorities are rockets, satellites and a rival AI lab, not your pull requests. None of that is a reason to panic and rip Cursor out tomorrow. It is a reason to keep your setup portable and not marry a single vendor, which was good advice before any of this and is better advice now.
The honest take
Cursor is still an excellent editor this morning, and it will probably stay excellent for a while, because SpaceX paid $60bn and would like a return. But “best tool” and “tool owned by someone whose interests align with yours” are different questions, and a lot of developers are about to learn the difference the slow way. Keep a backup harness you know how to switch to. That is the whole lesson.
